Unilever is a British-Dutch multinational consumer goods company, one of the world’s largest, with a vast portfolio of brands spanning food, beauty, personal care, and home care products. It was formed in 1929 through the merger of Dutch margarine producer Margarine Unie and British soap maker Lever Brothers. Unilever operates in over 190 countries and its products are used by 3.4 billion people daily.

Founded in 1929 through the merger of Margarine Unie and Lever Brothers.  Lever Brothers, founded by William Hesketh Lever, was a pioneer in consumer goods, focusing on innovation and marketing. Margarine Unie had roots in the Jurgens and Van den Bergh families, who had been in the dairy and margarine business.

Unilever’s products are sold in numerous countries across the Americas, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Africa, and the Middle East. It offers a wide array of products, including food (like Knorr, Hellmann’s, Ben & Jerry’s), beauty and personal care (like Dove, Lux, Sunsilk), and home care products (like Omo, Sunlight).

Unilever emphasizes a commitment to sustainable living and believes in making a positive impact on the world. Although a single entity, Unilever is represented by two holding companies: Unilever PLC (based in London) and Unilever NV (based in Rotterdam). Unilever has faced scrutiny for past practices, including instances of forced labor and mistreatment on plantations linked to its predecessor, Lever Brothers.

Unilever’s history in South Africa dates back to 1890 with the introduction of Sunlight Soap. The first factory was established in Cape Town in 1912, followed by another in Durban in 1914. A margarine factory was built in Boksburg in 1954.  Unilever remains a significant player in the South African market, with a diverse range of products available in stores and through online retailers.
