The Municipal Infrastructure Support Agent (MISA) invites suitably qualified unemployed young people, graduates and students to apply for its Apprenticeship and Experiential Learnership Programmes for the 2026/2027 financial year.

These programmes provide technical training and practical workplace experience to candidates interested in municipal infrastructure careers.

Successful candidates will be placed at municipalities identified by MISA. Applicants are encouraged to select a municipality close to where they live to reduce travelling and accommodation expenses.

About the MISA Apprenticeship Programme

The MISA Apprenticeship Programme is a three-year structured learnership programme aimed at training successful learners to become qualified artisans.

The programme targets unemployed young people from TVET colleges and other accredited training institutions who possess qualifications relevant to the advertised trades.

Successful applicants will receive on-the-job and off-the-job training. They will enter into three-year learnership contracts with MISA and be placed at participating host municipalities.

Minimum Requirements for Electrical, Plumbing and Bricklaying

Applicants must have one of the following relevant qualifications:

• Engineering Science or a complete N2 Engineering qualification consisting of four subjects with the relevant trade theory
• Engineering Science, Industrial Electronics, Mathematics and a fourth subject relevant to the required trade
• A technical trade theory programme quality-assured by a SETA and considered equivalent to NQF Level 3
• A relevant Engineering NC(V) Certificate with seven subjects at NQF Level 3
• Technical Grade 11 with Mathematics, Science, a language and a related theory subject
• A relevant N6 Certificate or National Technical Diploma in the T, S or N stream directly related to the trade

Minimum Requirements for Motor Mechanic and Diesel Mechanic

Applicants must have one of the following:

• Technical Grade 12 with Mathematics
• Engineering Science or a complete N2 Engineering qualification consisting of four subjects with the relevant trade theory
• Engineering Science, Industrial Electronics, Mathematics and Motor or Diesel Mechanic Trade Theory
• N3 Engineering with four subjects including Engineering Science, Industrial Electronics, Mathematics and the relevant Diesel or Motor Mechanic Trade Theory

About the Experiential Learnership Programme

The MISA Experiential Learnership Programme provides workplace-based learning opportunities to unemployed graduates and students from universities, universities of technology and TVET colleges.

It caters for graduates who require workplace exposure to enter the labour market and students who need Work-Integrated Learning to complete their qualifications.

Graduate Experiential Learning

MISA is offering two-year experiential learning opportunities to unemployed graduates in technical fields relevant to municipal infrastructure planning, operations and maintenance.

Applicants must have a relevant qualification from a recognised university, university of technology or TVET college.

Work-Integrated Learning

The Work-Integrated Learning component is available to students who require between 12 and 24 months of practical workplace experience to complete their academic programmes.

Applicants must provide a release letter from their institution confirming that they are permitted or required to undertake workplace exposure.

Participating Municipalities

Successful candidates will be placed at municipalities identified by MISA across South Africa.

Applicants must indicate the name of their preferred municipality on the MISA application form. Candidates are encouraged to apply for placement within the municipal area where they reside.

Duties and Training

Successful candidates may receive practical training and workplace exposure in the following areas:

• Municipal infrastructure planning and implementation
• Infrastructure operations and maintenance
• Electrical infrastructure
• Civil engineering services
• Plumbing
• Bricklaying
• Motor vehicle maintenance
• Diesel mechanical work
• Town and regional planning
• Technical project support
• On-the-job and off-the-job artisan training

Applicants must be willing and available for placement, rotation or relocation to other municipalities or private-sector organisations where necessary to obtain sufficient workplace exposure.

MISA does not guarantee permanent employment after completion of the programme.

• Certified copies of relevant qualifications
• A certified copy of the applicant’s South African identity document
• Proof of residential address
• A release letter from the institution of higher learning for Work-Integrated Learning applicants
