The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) has officially opened applications for its Graduate Internship Programme and Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Programme for the 2026–2028 financial years.

Graduate Internship Programme (24 Months)
This programme is aimed at unemployed graduates who have completed a minimum 3-year or 4-year tertiary qualification from a recognised institution.

- Have never participated in a government internship before

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Programme (12–18 Months)
This programme is ideal for students currently registered at a recognised Higher Education Institution who require workplace exposure to complete their qualification.
WIL Requirements

- Be registered at a recognised institution
- Submit a formal institutional letter requesting WIL
- Be unemployed
- Have never participated in a government WIL programme
- Be a KwaZulu-Natal resident

Our mandate is derived from the Constitution and relevant legislation. As such the Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs is designated to administer various acts in CoGTA such as:
- Disaster Management Act, 2002 (Act No 57 of 2002.
- Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, 2000 (Act No. 32 of 2000).
- Local Government: Municipal Structures Act, 1998 (Act No. 117 of 1998).
- The Intergovernmental Relations Framework Act (Act No. 13, of 2005).
- Fire Brigade Services Act, (Act No. 99 of 1987)
