The Agricultural Research Council (ARC): Animal Production Internship Programme

The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is welcoming applications from qualified South African graduates for a 3-year fixed-term internship in Animal Breeding & Genetics at ARC-Animal Production (ARC-AP), located in Irene, Pretoria.

Due Date: 31 July 2025

Placement: ARC-AP, Irene, Pretoria, South Africa

Duration: 3 years (fixed contract)

Remuneration: Competitive and market-related

About the Internship

This internship offers a hands-on chance to be involved in advanced research in animal genetics and biotechnology. Interns will work closely with senior researchers on molecular lab work, data gathering, farmer outreach, and scientific reporting.

Main Duties

  • Assist with project planning and technical activities
  • Collect samples, capture data, and ensure quality control
  • Conduct laboratory procedures such as DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and fragment analysis
  • Support farmer engagement and technology transfer initiatives
  • Prepare reports and presentations
  • Maintain lab equipment and participate in workshops and meetings
  • Help the research team meet project goals efficiently

Requirements

  • MSc degree in Animal Science, Genetics, Biotechnology, or related field
  • Practical experience with molecular lab techniques (e.g., DNA extraction, PCR)
  • Good understanding of research methods
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office
  • A valid driver’s license is a plus
