The Development Action Group| DAG: 2026 P.R/ Media and Communications Intern Programme

The Development Action Group (DAG) is a leading non-profit, non-governmental organisation. DAG’s mission is to create, implement and support community-centred developments in order to address economic, social, and spatial imbalances.
Placement: Cape Town
Fixed Term: 1-year contract (subject to a probation period.)
Start Date: 01 March 2026, or as soon as possible.
Reporting to the: Programme Director.
Essential Job Functions:
- Provide assistance to project teams to support DAG’s advocacy and lobbying agenda.
- Assist the communications team to promote DAG’s organisational impact and public profile through effective communication and media strategies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with developing, shaping and managing DAG’s communications, including media relations, social media, website, annual report and newsletters.
- Assist with content production for a range of different audiences, including writing compelling press statements, advocacy materials, collecting and writing stories about our work, developing content for our website, and other forms of digital and print communications.
- Assist with building and strengthening DAG’s media relations by writing compelling press statements, engaging with journalists and news/media agencies, and growing our reach.
- Assist with identifying and developing communication channels for reaching target audiences.
- Assist with managing DAG’s social media channels by developing content for social media, sharing relevant stories and engaging with audiences on a variety of social media platforms.
- Assist with enhancing DAG’s digital presence (in particular our website, newsletter and social media), including building our online audience, increasing engagement and reach, maximising our overall impact, and creating a more structured brand across our digital communication channels.
- Working with DAG’s programmes to repackage our work, research and advocacy materials for communication, including coming up with fresh ideas for how to share our work in an engaging way.
- Analysing the engagement of our communication methods over a range of platforms on an on-going basis.
Educational Qualifications / Experience:
- Relevant University Degree or Diploma in Communications, Media Studies, Marketing, Journalism, Development Studies, or a related field.
- Prior experience in a support role for designing tools and strategies for public relations and marketing.
- Basic knowledge of advocacy, social justice, housing, and urban development is an advantage.
- Practical experience using social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
- Familiarity with social media platforms, content creation, and digital marketing tools.
- Experience with writing, editing, and research.
Requirements:
- Excellent English writing skills and effective communication abilities (both written and verbal).
- Ability to use Microsoft computer packages, MS Word, Excel PowerPoint, Word-Press, Canva, Photoshop, Mailchimp, Loomly, adobe Pro at an intermediate level.
- Experience with writing stories.
- Video editing at a beginner level.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Creative thinking and attention to detail.
- Organisational and time management skills.
- Ability to plan independently and meet deadlines.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with limited supervision.
- Ability to earn the respect and confidence of team members and project partners, and collaborate effectively in a team environment.
