The Department of National Treasury is hiring and invites eligible South African youths to apply for its 2026/27 Work Integrated Learning Internship programme

Stipend and Duration

Successful candidates will receive a stipend of R79 911 per annum (all-inclusive).

The programme duration is 18 months.

National Treasury (South Africa) is the government department responsible for managing the country’s public finances and shaping economic policy. It oversees the national budget, controls government spending, manages public debt, and develops financial regulations to ensure transparency and accountability. National Treasury also works to promote sustainable economic growth, improve public sector efficiency, and support sound fiscal management across all levels of government.

Programme Overview

Our 18-month Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Programme offers opportunities for practical workplace exposure to N6 TVET College students, who are required to complete their qualifications. Students must obtain relevant workplace exposure to combine theoretical knowledge with practical real work experience, this enhances employability, work readiness, and professional competence.

The National Treasury is responsible for managing South Africa’s national government finances. Supporting efficient and sustainable public financial management is fundamental to the promotion of economic development, good governance, social progress and a rising standard of living for all South Africans. The Constitution of the Republic (Chapter 13) mandates the National Treasury to ensure transparency, accountability and sound financial controls in the management of public finances.

Required documents:

  • Detailed CV with contact details of three recent references;
  • Certain documentations will still be required to be uploaded on the system such as copies of all qualifications including National Senior Certificate/Matric, ID, etc., however these documents need not be certified at point of application however certification will be required prior to attending the interviews.

The National Treasury’s legislative mandate is also described in the Public Finance Management Act (Chapter 2). The National Treasury is mandated to promote government’s fiscal policy framework; to coordinate macroeconomic policy and intergovernmental financial relations; to manage the budget preparation process; to facilitate the Division of Revenue Act, which provides for an equitable distribution of nationally raised revenue between national, provincial and local government; and to monitor the implementation of provincial budgets.

As mandated by the executive and Parliament, the National Treasury will continue to support the optimal allocation and utilisation of financial resources in all spheres of government to reduce poverty and vulnerability among South Africa’s most marginalised.

Over the next 10 years National Treasury priorities include increasing investment in infrastructure and industrial capital; improving education and skills development to raise productivity; improving the regulation of markets and public entities; and fighting poverty and inequality through efficient public service delivery, expanded employment levels, income support and empowerment.

Short-listing process:

  • Correspondence will be entered into with short-listed candidates only;
  • All short-listed candidates will be subjected to personnel suitability checks and the successful candidate will undergo security vetting.
  • All shortlisted candidates for SMS posts will be subjected to a technical exercise relating to technical elements of the job. The logistics will be communicated by the Department;
  • Short-listed applicants must be willing to undergo a competency exercise as part of the selection process.

The National Treasury does not support the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) when competing in the recruitment and selection process for any of its positions. Appointment process:

  • The National Treasury reserves the right not to make an appointment, put a position on hold or re-advertise a post without advising candidates;
  • Appointment is subject to security clearance, the signing of a performance agreement or plan, verification of the applicant’s documents and reference checking, including social media checks;
  • Successful candidates will be appointed on probation for the period of twelve (12) months into the prescribed rules.
