Invitation from Umzimkhulu Local Municipality for unemployed South African youth to apply for its Learner Fire-fighter Learnership Programme 2026.

About the Programme

This structured learnership combines classroom-based instruction with real-world emergency response experience. Successful candidates will gain valuable exposure to firefighting operations and community safety initiatives.

During the programme, learners will:

  • Participate in supervised firefighting and rescue operations
  • Support emergency response services
  • Take part in practical drills and formal assessments
  • Assist with fire prevention and community awareness campaigns
  • This programme lays a strong foundation for future careers in firefighting, disaster management, and public service.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric) certificate
  • Firefighter One qualification
  • Hazmat Awareness certification
  • Medical and physical fitness for strenuous duties
  • No criminal record (background checks will apply)

Advantageous:

  • Valid Code B (or higher) driver’s license
  • Applicants must also be willing to work shifts, weekends, public holidays, and in high-pressure environments.

Key Performance Areas

  • Assist in firefighting and rescue operations under supervision

  • Comply with occupational health and safety standards
  • Support disaster management operations when required

Appointments are subject to:

  • Medical fitness and physical assessments
  • Psychometric testing
  • Reference checks

Successful candidates will be required to sign a formal learner/firefighter training agreement in line with municipal policies.
