Invitation from Umzimkhulu Local Municipality for unemployed South African youth to apply for its Learner Fire-fighter Learnership Programme 2026.
About the Programme
This structured learnership combines classroom-based instruction with real-world emergency response experience. Successful candidates will gain valuable exposure to firefighting operations and community safety initiatives.
During the programme, learners will:
- Participate in supervised firefighting and rescue operations
- Support emergency response services
- Take part in practical drills and formal assessments
- Assist with fire prevention and community awareness campaigns
- This programme lays a strong foundation for future careers in firefighting, disaster management, and public service.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric) certificate
- Firefighter One qualification
- Hazmat Awareness certification
- Medical and physical fitness for strenuous duties
- No criminal record (background checks will apply)
Advantageous:
- Valid Code B (or higher) driver’s license
- Applicants must also be willing to work shifts, weekends, public holidays, and in high-pressure environments.

Key Performance Areas
- Assist in firefighting and rescue operations under supervision

- Support disaster management operations when required
Appointments are subject to:
- Medical fitness and physical assessments
- Psychometric testing
- Reference checks
Successful candidates will be required to sign a formal learner/firefighter training agreement in line with municipal policies.
