Sappi exists to build a thriving world by unlocking the power of renewable resources to benefit people, communities, and the planet. A purpose is so much more than words on a page – it’s why we exist. It is our definition, our inspiration, our call to create a brighter future for the world and our business.

As OneSappi, we do business safely, with integrity and courage, making smart decisions that we execute with speed. At Sappi, our values are the backbone of our everyday attitude, conduct, and operations. Making every day more sustainable since 1936

Sappi’s story began when South African Pulp and Paper Industries Limited was established on 17 December 1936. Our name was soon abbreviated to ‘SA Pulp’, which later became known as Sappi. We got our start manufacturing paper from straw at our first mill east of Johannesburg. Today, Sappi is a global diversified woodfibre company focused on providing dissolving pulp, packaging and speciality papers, graphic papers, as well as biomaterials and biochemicals to customers in more than 150 countries.

Graphic paper, best known for use in offices and in glossy magazines, is no longer our only forte. We are also a world leader in the production of dissolving wood pulp (DWP) for use in the manufacture of viscose staple fibre (VSF) and a force to be reckoned with in the global packaging and speciality paper market.

Our global headquarters in Johannesburg (South Africa), manages all our Sappi Paper & Packaging, Sappi Pulp and Sappi Forests. A number of regional functions like finance, human resources, sales and marketing, technical and engineering as well as board functions are also based here.

Sappi was formed in South Africa in 1936 to serve South African consumers with local produced paper. We have a tradition of innovating and developing new products to meet local demand for newsprint, graphic papers, packaging papers, containerboard – used to protect our customers’ products (especially in the agricultural sector) – and tissue paper for household, medical and industrial use in the Southern Africa region.

Almost all of the production of our mills in South Africa is exported. Sappi Southern Africa operates five mills and has a combined production capacity of 86,000 m³ sawn timber, 660,000 tons of paper, 636,000 tons of paper pulp and 1.15 million tons of dissolving wood pulp per annum.
