Female Ex-Political Prisoner Research Assistant: Robben Island Museum

Wages: R 7 332,63 pm

Duration: 6 months fixed term contract

The above short-term positions exist in the Heritage and Research Department at Robben Island Museum.

Responsibilities:

  • Travel with the Researchers to conduct life history interviews during data collection sessions.
  • Attend compulsory training sessions/ workshops to be offered by RIM in Cape Town.
  • Attend and contribute to project inception, progress and ad hoc meetings pertaining the women imprisonment project.
  • As a Project Ambassador, politely and meaningfully address all questions from the interviewees about the project and RIM’s mandate and current heritage programmes.
  • Ensure that a sample size of women EPPs in the 9 provinces are interviewed and project targets are met.
  • Assist with identification of women EPPs that are eligible for interviews within the provinces.
  • Link the Researchers/RIM to the EPP’s and/or EPP family to be interviewed.
  • Ensure a conducive and healthy atmosphere during interview session.
  • As a Project Ambassador, outline the benefits of the interview project in relation to the AEPP and RIM as World Heritage Site to each EPP and/or EPP family to be interviewed.
  • Educate all EPPs about RIM, a World Heritage Site, its heritage programmes, and benefits that exist within other State Departments, i.e. Department of Military Veterans.
  • Market RIM through educating EPPs and their families on the mandate of RIM and its heritage programmes.
  • Generate and submit monthly reports.
  • Able to conduct any other duties that aimed at benefiting RIM and EPPs within the province, i.e. attend
  • Meetings to talk about RIM heritage programmes, distribute resource materials to EPPs.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Be a women ex-political prisoner with a verifiable prison number
  • Reside in the Western Cape
  • Must have completed Grade 12
  • Knowledge of basic computer literacy to search data and input data.
  • Excellent telephone manner and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in English and two of the African languages.
  • Ability to travel away for 4 weeks at a time.
  • RIM is an EE, AA, employer and reserves the right not to make an appointment if suitable candidates are not found.
